Volume I of this manual describes the standard methods used by BLM (for the Assessment, Inventory and Monitoring program) and NRCS (for the National Resource Inventory). The data from these two programs, and others that use these methods, is available through the Landscape Data Commons, and is used to calibrate fractional cover tools such as the Rangelands Analysis Platform (RAP).

Volume II of this manual describes additional methods, including soil water infiltration, a penetrometer for monitoring compaction, plant production and vegetation methods for riparian areas. It also includes an appendix with sample size tables for many of the methods in both volumes.
